AA Gititu
Gititu Factory (Nyeri)
Kenya Central, Nyeri
About the Producer:
This washed Kenyan lot is processed at the Gititu Factory, a wet mill in Nyeri, Central Kenya, where cherries are grown by surrounding smallholders and delivered to the mill. Around 800 smallholders contribute, typically managing ~100 trees each. The factory sits at 1,400–1,600 meters above sea level, and Nyeri is famous for producing coffees with intense, complex, flavour-dense profiles.
Processing Method:
This lot follows Kenya’s classic washed process, designed to maximize clarity and structure:
- Farmers hand-sort cherries to remove unripe and overripe fruit.
- Coffee is pulped and sorted by density into three grades.
- Grades 1–2 ferment for 16–24 hours under closed shade.
- After washing and density sorting, the coffee is soaked in clean water for 16–18 hours.
- Sun-dried on African raised beds for up to 21 days, with covers used midday and overnight.
About the Region:
Nyeri’s highland conditions and fertile volcanic soils (notably Nitisol) support exceptional coffee quality. The region consistently produces layered, high-definition coffees with both intensity and elegance.
Why We Love This Coffee:
AA Gititu is a classic, high-scoring Kenyan profile: bright yet sweet, layered with floral citrus and white currant, and grounded by a rich fig-like depth. A stunning filter coffee, and a unique espresso for those who love lively, structured cups.
