Chelchele Washed Organic
by Tadesse Desta
Ethiopia Gedeb, Gedeo Zone
About the Producer:
This organic, washed coffee is produced at the Chelchele washing and drying station, located in the village of Chelchele, Gedeb district, Gedeo Zone. Managed by the Tadesse Desta Group , the site sits at 2000 meters above sea level and processes cherries grown between 1900-2100 masl. The group ensures full traceability and holds certifications for organic and Rainforest Alliance (RFA) standards, working closely with local smallholders to deliver high-quality, sustainable coffee.
Processing Method:
This coffee is processed using the traditional Ethiopian washed method:
- Ripe cherries are delivered daily by local smallholders and hand-sorted for quality.
- Fermentation and washing are performed in 14 standard tanks using clean spring water.
- The coffee is dried on 130-150 raised beds for 10-15 days until optimal moisture is reached.
About the Region:
The Chelchele site lies in Gedeb, at the southernmost edge of the Yirgacheffe region, in Ethiopia's Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region (SNNPR). The fertile red-brown soil and intercropping with Enset, beans, and avocado trees create a balanced ecosystem. With 1404 mm of annual rainfall and mild temperatures (15.5–17.8°C), the region is ideal for producing complex, floral, and fruit-forward coffees.
Why We Love This Coffee:
Chelchele embodies the "yellow fruit" flavor profile—bright, sweet, and tropical. Expect refined acidity and notes of lemon meringue, peach, and yellow fruit. A clean and elegant Ethiopian coffee that shines in both espresso and pour-over brews.
