About the Producer:
This coffee is processed at Ichamara Factory, which operates under the New Gikaru Farmers’ Cooperative Society in Nyeri County. Established by local farmers in 1963, Ichamara is the cooperative’s top-performing wet mill. The cooperative has approximately 1,482 active members, with each farmer maintaining an average of around 200 coffee trees. Investments in modern drying systems and new drying tables help improve consistency and preserve quality.
Processing Method:
This lot is prepared using Kenya’s traditional fully washed process to maximize brightness, complexity, and clarity:
- Fully ripe cherries are selectively handpicked and delivered to Ichamara Factory.
- The cherries are carefully sorted before being pulped.
- The parchment undergoes an overnight fermentation of approximately 12–24 hours.
- After fermentation, the coffee is washed and graded into P1, P2, P3, P lights, and pods.
- The parchment is dried on raised tables for 8–14 days, with constant turning and protection overnight.
About the Region:
Ichamara Factory is located in Nyeri County at elevations between 1,400 and 1,700 meters above sea level. The surrounding farms benefit from fertile red volcanic soils, mild temperatures, and approximately 1,150 mm of annual rainfall. These growing conditions contribute to the vivid acidity, layered fruit, and clean structure for which Nyeri coffees are celebrated.
